How your funds help us to make a difference….

Anna Segatti

Taking part in the 50 for 50 challenge by organising some of the fabulous activities suggested on the site, is a fabulous way to raise vital funds and to have fun with friends, colleagues and family.

As a breast cancer survivor, I feel proud to work for a company which is so active in the fight against breast cancer.

Our work with Breakthrough Breast Cancer on activities like these, we will make a difference – one step at a time.

Why Breakthrough needs your help more urgently than ever…

Over 100 women in the UK are diagnosed with breast cancer every single day. Wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and colleagues are lost to the disease leaving friends and family devastated.

My inspiration

“Not a day goes by when I don’t think about it. It’s only when you go through something like breast cancer that you find a real purpose in fundraising to help make a difference. So, that’s what my husband and I spend a lot of our spare time doing. Last year we raised over £7,000 between us.” -- Ann Pearce-Ross, Avon Area Manager

Dr Avon Group Shot

One vision of a future free from the fear of breast cancer

As Breakthrough Breast cancer’s longest standing corporate supporter, Avon has contributed over £13.5 million towards Breakthrough’s vital work. Helping Breakthrough to establish the UK’s first dedicated breast cancer research centre.

Since Avon’s £5 million contribution to establishment of the research centre, Avon has continued to support the day to day work at there and contributed to some very specific projects to improve our understanding of breast cancer for years to come, including:

By investing in knowledge and expertise at the start of their careers, Avon’s investment will benefit their work and women affected breast cancer for years to come.

·         The Breakthrough Generations Study  http://www.breakthroughgenerations.org.uk/]

·         The ‘Dr Avon’ clinical fellowship program

Avon is funding four ‘Dr Avon’s’ – talented young doctors who are undergoing research training, to help move research efforts from bench to bedside as effectively as possible. By investing in knowledge and expertise at their start of their careers, Avon’s investment will benefit their work and women affected by breast cancer for years to come.

The Dr Avon programme is vital to Breakthrough’s patient-focused approach to research. Taking the views and experiences of women, from the clinic, directly to the laboratory

Here are a few example of how Dr Avon needs your help.

  • Each year 24 litres of nutrient broth is used to keep breast cancer cells alive in the lab: £480
  • Each year 1000 microscope slides are needed to view breast cancer cells under a microscope: £52
  • Dr Avon’s use their pipettes hundreds of times every week to prepare ingredients for their experiments. Each pipette costs £125.
